Washington's Birthday

Washington's Birthday Introduction - Narrated By Grant Raymond Barrett
No man was ever a more integral part in the building of this country than Mr. George Washington. He was head of the Convention in 1789 which led to the drawing up of that vital document we still have today: "The Constitution". Later in that same year, he was made the first president of this dear country at the meeting of the New Congress, right in the Big Apple! Now, that's New York City history, Ladies and Gentlemen! It was an office he richly deserved after bravely leading his armies of courageous, young men to the challenging fight against the British during the Revolutionary War!

Early American Song From Tennessee

I suppose you've heard of Washington, of Washington The Great, who fought the French and Red Coats there upon the Northern Lakes. And when King George of England oppressed their lovely land, our country fought for freedom then with Washington The Great. He was the first great President, the first to rule this land, and all the people honored him down to a single man.

He taught the people to be good and love their country, too, and everybody sang his praise as loudly as we do. He loved the little children, too, and took them out to ride and threw a silver dollar o'er broad Rappahannock's tide. And when he died, they buried him beside Potomac's wave and raised a marble monument to mark a hero's grave. If all the people in this land, his deeds would emulate, they'd grow to be like Washington, like Washington The Great!

Music and Lyrics by George M. Cohen (1932)
(In Honor Of George Washington's 200th Birthday)

Every little lad and lass, boys and girls of every class, here beneath the flag of stripe and star. From the time they start to school, when they learn the golden rule, always have been proud of what they are. And every day with lessons done, they sing their song of Washington, a song of love that reaches near and far:

First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen. That is the story of Washington. That is the glory of Washington. His spirit is here. His spirit is here. He's standing, commanding above. In word and deed, we follow the lead of the father of the land we love!

When to manhood comes the youth, with the knowledge and the truth of the revolutionary fray. Proud he is to be a son, of immortal Washington. Sacred is the memory of his day. Whenever drums begin to roll, within the nations heart and soul, a patriotic something seems to say:

First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen. That is the story of Washington. That is the glory of Washington. His spirit is here. His spirit is here. He's standing, commanding above. In word and deed, we follow the lead of the father of the land we love!
